Films Worth Seeing: Precious, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Avatar

Their are a host of terrific movies premiering in the fall of 2009.

It took the powerhouse teaming of Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry partnering with Lionsgate to bring this film to a wider audience. Directed by Lee Daniels Precious based on the riveting novel Push by Sapphire depicts the harrowing story of Clareece “Precious” Jones (Gabourey “Gabby” Sidibe) an overweight, illiterate youth who strives for something better for herself and her children.

She receives no help from her abusive mother Mary (Mo’Nique) who is receiving Oscar buzz for her visceral take-no-prisoners performance. The film is buoyed by noteworthy performances from a stripped down Mariah Carey, Paula Patton, Sherri Shepherd and Lenny Kravitz. Already a winner of the Sundance Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize there is strong buzz for an Oscar nomination. Release date: November 6.

Nine, The Men Who Stare at Goats, 2012, and The Twilight Saga: New Moon are November Releases

Also in November: Nine the Broadway musical based on Federico Fellini’s classic film 8 ½ is laden with a star-studded cast of Academy winners totaling 7 golden boys amongst them. The film follows famed movie director Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) as he struggles to direct his ninth film while juggling the seven women in his life: wife played by Marion Cotillard, mistress Penélope Cruz, muse Nicole Kidman, costume designer Judi Dench, mother Sophia Loren, American Journalist Kate Hudson, and a prostitute played by Black Eyed Peas’ lead singer Fergie. Helmed by Academy award nominated director Rob Marshall (Memoirs of a Geisha and Chicago ) who is hoping for a Best Picture nom. Release date: November 25 starring George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey is a dark comedy based on Jon Ronson’s 2005 well received nonfiction tome about a U.S. military unit that investigates the paranormal realm of telepathy and other psychic phenomena to cultivate psychic soldiers for combat. Release date: November 6

The Men Who Stare at Goats

2012 is an epic depiction of global cataclysm that connotes the end of the world, which was predicted centuries ago by the Mayans. Helmed by doomsday director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow) we witness the Vatican and other monuments crumble before our very eyes. Sci-fi writer Jackson Curtis (John Cusack) is in a race against time to secure his ex-wife (Amanda Peet) and their children from the imminent apocalypse. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Oliver Platt, Thandie Newton, Danny Glover and Woody Harrelson dexterously anchor this film. Additionally, with all the special effects audiences will be treated to a summer blockbuster-y extravaganza in the fall. Release date: November 13

Fans of Twilight will be able to view the second installment The Twilight Saga: New Moon on November 20th and witness the new burgeoning relationship between Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Jacob (TaylorLautner).

James Cameron Debuts Avatar

With the aid of new CGI technologies Director James Cameron will bring to life Avatar.A 3-D sci-fi adventure set on the planet Pandora where the characters are CG-rendered and blue. The $200 million-plus production highlights a paraplegic ex-Marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) who is thrust onto the alien planet as an Avatar, a human mind in an alien body. He encounters the Na’vi, a humanoid race that find themselves at odds with those from Earth. Sully is torn between two worlds as he fights for his own survival and that of the indigenous population. Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Zoe Saldana, Giovanni Ribisi CCH Pounder and Laz Alonso also co-star. Release date: December 18 Official site: http://www2.avatarmovie.com/

The Lovely Bones and Sherlock Holmes Set For December Releases

Also in December: The Lovely Bones Based on Alice Siebold’s 2002 best-seller about a 14-year-old girl Susie Salmon (Saoirse Ronan), residing in a small Pennsylvania town, is raped and murdered by her neighbor George Harvey (Stanley Tucci). Fantasy alleviates the despair with the CGI-created heavenlike realm of the “in between” where Susie watches her father (Mark Wahlberg), mother (Rachel Weisz), grandmother (Susan Sarandon), and siblings (Rose McIver and Christian Thomas Ashdale) grieve her death while attempting to solve her murder. Release date: December 11

Sherlock Holmes This literary icon will be receiving a contemporary makeover with Director Guy Ritchie (RocknRolla) ushering in a new and lighter perspective of the traditional Victorian sleuth through tempered humor and action. In the forefront is Robert Downey Jr., as a kung fu-fighting Holmes. His loyal and seemingly disgruntled sidekick Watson (Jude Law) is along for this new era Holmes. As well is Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams) portraying the investigator’s sultry love interest helping to round out the new and improved go-to mystery buster. Release date: December 25

Checked out the movie trailer for Sherlock Holmes and I'm liking the new twist on Holmes. That will be on the top of my list of must see. Thanks for the thorough listing.
