Adam Movie Review

Asperger’s Syndrome is the Center of this Film

Jul 29, 2009 Francine Brokaw

This movie deals with one man's search for love and understanding while finding his way in life.

After his father dies, Adam (Hugh Dancy) must learn to manage his life on his own. Afflicted with Asperger’s Syndrome, a form of autism, Adam has some difficulties dealing with certain situations, namely work and personal relationships.

Adam is an electronics genius. He is attractive and funny, but very odd. Then Beth (Rose Byrne) moves into the apartment building and she and Adam strike up a friendship, which soon leads to more.

Finding a New Friend

Beth embraces Adam’s oddities and learns about Asperger’s Syndrome. She tries to get him to open up and get more involved in the world around him. He has been basically sequestered from the world and now that he is on his own, Rose’s friendship is just what he needs to come out into the world.

Handling her own life as well as trying to help Adam navigate through his is difficult enough for Rose, but when her parents are added into the mix, things get very complicated.

Her father Marty (Peter Gallagher) tells her she can do much better. He likes Adam, but he wants something more for his daughter. Her mother (Amy Irving) on the other hand only wants what makes her daughter happy. She has been living in a strained relationship herself and only wants her daughter to find peace and love with a man.

The relationship between Adam and Beth is delicate. Then when Adam gets offered a job in Los Angeles and must move thousands of miles away, the couple must make their final commitment. Will Beth go with Adam or will he be left to navigate a whole new life on his own?

What they both discover is that changes in life can make things a lot better. Sometimes just going out of a comfort zone is more than challenging. It can be exhilarating.

Amy Irving is Back on the Big Screen

Amy Irving has been acting professionally for almost 35 years. She has acting running through her veins. Her father, director and producer Jules Irving and her mother, actress Priscilla Pointer, often brought her to work with them, so she learned the craft from the time she could barely walk. Amy Irving was last seen in the TV series. She is perhaps best remembered from her role of Hadass in the Barbra Streisand film Yentl. While her film career has not been as busy lately, her fans will definitely enjoy her in this film.

Adam is an interesting film about relationships, understanding, and love.
