In The Visitor, reclusive Connecticut economics professor Walter Vale (Richard Jenkins) coasts through life without vision or passion. He tries unsuccessfully to master playing the piano, but otherwise gives up on everything else in life, including his teaching career and the book he’s been working on for a long time.
When 62-year-old Walter attends a conference in New York on economic growth in developing countries, he travels to an apartment he owns in Manhattan. Upon arrival, he discovers that a young Muslim couple has been conned into living there for two months. This chance meeting sets off a series of events that changes Walter’s life forever.

Overture Films is offering free downloads of Tom McCarthy’s screenplay for The Visitor. McCarthy was inspired to write the story after visiting Oman and Lebanon and noticing how little he knew about the region, the people, and the culture. He attempts to capture the passion of the artists he saw there in his character of Tarek (Haaz Sleiman), the young man who unknowingly takes up residence in Walter’s apartment.
McCarthy burst onto the independent film scene in 2003 with his highly acclaimed film The Station Agent, which he also wrote and directed. This breakout film stars Peter Dinklage, Richard Kind, Patricia Clarkson, and Bobby Cannavale in a story about a lonely dwarf and the people who befriend him.
Awards and Nominations for The Visitor
A richly layered and subtle film, The Visitor has been well received by audiences and critics. McCarthy won the 2008 Interfaith Award from Brisbane International Film Festival, the 2008 Grand Special Prize for Best Film from Deauville Film Festival, the 2008 Best Director from Method Fest, and was nominated for 2008 Best Director and Best Original Screenplay from Satellite Awards and 2009 Best Director from Independent Spirit Awards.
In addition, the film’s star Richard Jenkins won the 2008 Silver St. George Award for Best Actor from the Moscow International Film Festival, the 2008 Best Actor from Method Fest, and the 2008 Spotlight Award from the National Board of Review, USA. Jenkins also was nominated for the 2008 Satellite Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama and the 2009 Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead.
