Each season introduces a new set of problems for Dexter Morgan, who must balance his time between work, family and his secret life as the Bay Harbor Butcher.

Dexter, a blood-spatter analyst and serial killer who preys upon other killers he has deemed deserving to die, is in constant danger of being found out. On a day to day basis he struggles with the same problems that ordinary people have-- making friends and keeping family life together--as well as guarding his dark, private life while honoring the code left to him by his foster father.

Season 1: Dexter Encounters His Double

Season One introduces Dexter, who works for the Miami PD as a blood spatter analyst. On his off time, he stalks and kills vicious murderers who have slipped through justice’s cracks. His adoptive father, a policeman, seeing Dexter’s dark side, taught him to channel this side of himself by using his urge to kill only to kill murderers, pedophiles, and other drains on society, and to skillfully cover up his tracks. In Season One, someone begins mimicking Dexter’s kills. He finds himself tracking down the “Ice Truck Killer”, who seems in many ways his kindred spirit. He begins a relationship with an abused woman who, like himself, has no interest in sex, and tries to come to terms with his sister’s relationship with a new boyfriend, one who seems too much like himself.

Season 2: Dexer Finds a Soul Mate

When the FBI brings in Special Agent Lundy to investigate the case of the Bay Harbor Butcher, Dexter fears his cover will be blown. His nemesis Doakes is also hot on his trail. When Dexter’s dumping spot for dismembered bodies is found in the bay, Dexter must outwit both Lundy and Doakes. Dexter also meets a woman artist named Lila who is much like him, possibly his soul mate. His encounters with her and her acceptance of his dark side jeopardize his growing relationship to Rita. Soon, he must make a choice between his safe cover with Rita and unleashing his spirit and joining Lila on killing sprees.

Season 3 Dexer Makes a Friend

In Season Three, Dexter makes a friend, an unusual happening in his life. District attorney Miguel Prada (Jimmy Smits) does not know that Dexter has killed his brother Oscar in a dope sting, and works with Dexter to find his brother’s murderer. Soon, Dexter finds his new friend has a taste for blood that matches his own. Maybe the two can work together as a team – or maybe not. Miguel does not have any respect for Dexter’s code. When Miguel begins to take justice into his own hand and become sloppy about it, Dexter has second thoughts about having a best friend. Dexter must also make a decision about marrying Rita and raising the baby she is carrying.

Season 4 : Dexter Becomes a Daddy

Season Four of Dexter gets off to an exciting start. with the first episode having a cliffhanger ending. Dexter, now married with a new baby in the house, is suffering from lack of sleep. Between taking his turn nights with the baby and his other extracurricular activities of murder, Dexter is becoming more and more sleep deprived. And a sleepy Dexter is a dangerous Dexter, prone to make mistakes. In the meantime, Lundy returns to track The Trinity Killer (John Lithgow) and renews his relationship with Deb. What follows is yet to be seen, but will be certain to come to an exciting conclusion.

Seasons 1-3 are available on DVD. Season 4 is currently playing on Showtime.
